Lakhimpur Congress Kicks off Month-long Programme of Mahatma Gandhi

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC) on Wednesday started its month-long programme for the celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

LDCC organized various programmes to celebrate World Non-violence Day on the occasion of the Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The programmes began with the lighting of earthen lamp in front of the statue of the Father of the Nation in the morning. It was followed by a public meeting at North Lakhimpur Rajiv Bhavan with LDCC president Dr. Joy Prakash Das in the chair. LDCC felicitated over 50 senior Congress leaders in the programme wherein former LDCC president Kan Nath Phukan and present vice-president Gagan Chandra Borah delivered speech on Gandhism.

On the other hand, former Principal of Dhemaji College, Dr. Puspa Nath Borah delivered an elaborate speech on ‘Mahatma Gandhi: Not only past, but future also’. Former Lakhimpur MLA Ghana Burhagohain also delivered speech in the programme. The LDCC president criticized the existing government, alleging its attempt to malign the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi. Following the public meeting, LDCC, in association with District Mahila Congress, Youth Congress and Sewa Dol, took out a Pada-Yatra programme in North Lakhimpur town to promote the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi in the society. Notably, LDCC will observe the 150th birth anniversary of the noble figure with a month-long programme.
