Lakhimpur meet stresses fighting prejudice against leprosy patients

LAKHIMPUR: An awareness meeting on leprosy was organized by Lakhimpur District Leprosy Eradication Committee on Thursday on the occasion of Leprosy Eradication Day. The event was organized in connection with the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the Dezoo Chah Janajati High School premises with a motto of ‘The world without leprosy through intellectual love’.
In order to sensitize awareness about the disease and against the prejudice still rampant in the society in connection with the disease, a rally was taken out in the locality. The rally was inaugurated by medical officer Hemanta Kumar Dutta. The awareness meeting commenced with Dezoo Chah Janajati High School headmaster Padma Sonowal in the chair. Lakhimpur District Development Commissioner Manoj Baruah, Joint Director of Lakhimpur District Health Services Dr. Gunin Kumar Gogoi, District Immunization Officer Dr. Shilpi Saikia, and Dezoo Gaon Panchayat president Karneswar Basing took part in the programme. A total of five leprosy patients were greeted with gamosa in the awareness programme
In the awareness meeting, stress was laid on how the drugs distributed free of charge, early detection and treatment could help in curing leprosy patients. People were appealed to fight not only against the disease but also against the prejudice and discrimination that had infected the society centering around the issue. The event emphasized that the correct understanding of leprosy and compassion toward those with the disease, an environment to feel the patients concerned could go to hospitals to receive treatment just as they used to do before they contracted leprosy and enabling them to lead full lives in society could help in eradicating the disease from the world.
