KOKRAJHAR: The acquisition of 36 bighas of land under dag no. 497 belonging to Boro tribal people at Chandamari in Kokrjhar by the district administration for construction of new Circuit House has temporarily been halted due to intensive opposition from different quarters. The tribal villagers have protested the move and decided to move Gauhati High Court.

As the message of land acquisition in tribal land came from different media, the local MLA Lawrence Islary and CEM of BTC Pramod Boro were compelled to visit the proposed site for derailment.

Speaking to media persons, local MLA Lawrence Islary on Sunday said he had enquired about the matter and discussed it with the district administration but acquisition of land in tribal land was not final. He said the required land would be taken in suitable areas but not in tribal land inherited from time immemorial. He also assured the villagers that he will discuss the matter with the BTC authority as well.

Meanwhile, the CEM of BTC Pramod Boro said some news regarding the acquisition of land for construction of new Circuit House came to light but the location was not finalized. He said many government projects could come and the government has its own lands for constructions. He said some people were trying to mislead the villagers and such misleading information could create an unnecessary situation. He called upon the villagers that the government will not acquire tribal inherited land.
