Lazaiholla camp inmates stage protest, demand rehabilitation

TINSUKIA: The Laika-Dodhia rehabilitation issue took an aggressive turn on Thursday after several hundred inmates of Lazaiholla camp broke open the police barricade in a bid to enter the Deputy Commissioner's office at Tinsukia and later squatted outside the main gate.

The protesters, including a large number of women who were camping at makeshift tents braving severe cold and rain since the past 30 days, marched from Lazaiholla camp denouncing the government on relocation matters. The agitation was spearheaded by Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), MMK and TMMK. The activists alleged no member from the committee headed by Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya ever appraised the camp inmates about the rehabilitation agenda. Declining to accept any land other than 470 ha degraded forest area of Ouguriunder Digboi Forest Division, the leaders of TMPK declared that they would forcibly occupy the land after January 31 as planned, if the government failed to concede to their demand.
