Lok Kalyan Diwas in Nagaon: DC urges officials to serve people with humility and sincerity

NAGAON: Lok Kalyan Diwas was observed in Nagaon on Wednesday with a call for government officials and employees to dedicate themselves to public service with sincerity and humility.

Addressing the programme organised by the Nagaon District Administration, District Commissioner Debashish Sharma urged government officials and staff to abandon any sense of superiority and work wholeheartedly for the welfare of the people.

In his address, the District Commissioner said that people often remain occupied with what they receive from the government or the country, but seldom reflect on what they contribute to society. He expressed concern that the negative attitude and lack of ethical values among a section of government employees have created fear and hesitation among many citizens in approaching government offices.

He appealed to all officials and employees to listen patiently to the grievances of ordinary people, particularly those coming from rural areas, and make sincere efforts to resolve their problems. He stressed that citizens should not be made to suffer due to excuses such as “this is not my responsibility” or “there is no time today.”

Highlighting the importance of humility in public service, Sharma also beautifully recited the renowned Assamese poem “Dhulikana Moi” by Chandradhar Barua.

On the occasion, the Lok Sevak Award for this year was presented to Devyani Bora, Senior Administrative Assistant of the Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Commissioner’s Office. The award was presented by the District Commissioner, who honoured her with a traditional gamosa, a memento, and a certificate of appreciation.

Speaking as the distinguished guest, noted reciter, All India Radio announcer and teacher Purabi Saikia delivered a brief lecture on the life and contributions of Gopinath Bordoloi. The programme was also addressed by noted short story writer Shibananda Kakati, Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Commissioner Raj Barua, and award recipient Devyani Bora. Additional District Commissioner Pallavi Gogoi explained the objectives of the programme.
