Guwahati: Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita - becomes the first Assamese officer to take charges as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) in a Corps of Indian Army.

Lt. Gen. Rana P. Kalita was recently awarded the highly prestigious Uttam Yudh Sewa Medal (UYSM). He is also the first in Assam to be honored with UYSM.

Lt. Gen. Rana P. Kalita was previously awarded the Seva Medal (SM) and the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). In the aftermath of the 'Fedayeen attack' in the Uri sector of Kashmir valley, he was also awarded the prestigious 'Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) for his excellent performance and service to the country as the General Officer Commanding of the XIX Infantry Division in Baramullah.

Meanwhile, on the eve of Republic Day, Olympian Neeraj Chopra will be honored with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal. Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian track & field athlete to win an Olympic gold medal.

President Ram Nath Kovind will present 384 defence personnel with gallantry and other medals at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Twelve Shaurya Chakras, 29 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, four Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, 53 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, thirteen Yudh Seva Medals, and three Bar to Vishisht Seva Medals are among the prizes.
