Man trampled to death by wild jumbo in Goalpara district

Goalpara: The man-elephant conflict in Goalpara district took a sad turn when early Tuesday morning, a senior citizen was trampled to death by a wild tusker.

The victim, Tiken Chandra Nath came out of his residence in Monakosa Bakaitary village under Matia revenue circle with his 15-month old granddaughter for a morning walk. The elephant appeared from nowhere and attacked Nath from behind. Nath fell down on the road and his granddaughter also slipped from his arms.

The pachyderm, after trampling Nath, left alone his granddaughter who was unhurt. As the few eye-witnesses made hue and cry, the elephant immediately left the village and took shelter in the nearby jungle of West Matia.

“I didn’t know about the incident. However, waking up to the terrifying noises by the people, I came out and found my father lying on the road,” said Pranab Nath, TET teacher and the son of the deceased.

Meanwhile, local police arrived at the scene and took the body for post-mortem. However, the forest department officials arrived late. “This is the sixth death caused by wild elephants in and around greater Matia area in the last few years. A woman was killed three months back at Santipur Matia,” said Kandarpa Nath, a local youth. The locals have demanded a practical and long-term solution to this long-standing problem.
