LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the world, Earth Day was celebrated in Lakhimpur too on Thursday in order to pledge support for environmental protection. In 2021, the event marks the 51st anniversary of its annual celebrations. This year, the theme for Earth Day is 'Restore Our Earth'.

In Lakhimpur, the event was observed by Mangalbodh Jagaran Kendra, a social organization which is dedicated for the enhancement of education, language and literature and service of health, humanity and society. Following the COVID-19 protocol, an awareness programme on the occasion was organized at Mahara village of the district in association with Dibyajyoti Borah Hazarika. The programme started with the lighting of ceremonial lamp by social activist Dimbeswar Hazarika. It was chaired by Sanjib Upadhyay, the headmaster of Nabojjal High School.

Director of Mangalbodh Jagaran Kendra, Jiten Baruah explained the objectives of the programme and significance of the event. Attending the programme as appointed speaker, literary personality Bharat Rajkhowa delivered a lecture on 'Our duties with regard to protecting the biodiversity and ecological balance'. On the other hand, Sukumar Payeng, as guest of honour, delivered his speech on the demerits of plastic waste. In the programme, Chakradhar Konwar presented patriotic song while Dibya Konwar staged a Bihu dance.
