PALASBARI: A massive protest broke out against the construction of a new ultratech cement factory here in Chhaygaon in the Kamrup district. The protesters from various organizations chanted slogans against the setting up of cement factories on agricultural lands in the area.

The company is planning to set up a factory on about 60 bighas of land at Chowdhurykhat village under Chhaygaon Revenue Circle in South Kamrup. There have already been several agitations by the locals to stop this anti-public interest activity.

Bamunigaon Anchalik Rabha Students' Union, Chhaygaon Anchalik Rabha Students' Union, Chouwdhurykhat, Kawoimari, South Bangkakata, Belguri, and Dhowargaon Lat Land Conservation Committee staged a huge sit-in on the office premises of Gobardhan Anchalik Yuvak Sangha against the setting up of Ultratech Cement Factory on agricultural land at Chowdhurykhat village in Chhaygaon.

The protesters condemned the alleged use of agricultural land and the establishment of cement factories and threatened to launch a violent agitation.

"No industry that could threaten the lives of the people will be allowed to be set up in the Rabha Hasong area," said Ramakanta Rabha, vice president of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC).

Nikhil Rabha Students' Union vice president Pradip Rabha said that if the government does not stop allowing the setting up of cement factories on agricultural lands, he will urge people not to vote for the BJP during the upcoming elections. He also urged the local brokers to refrain from such anti-people activities. Dr. Kamala Kanta Kalita, former minister and leader of the Asom Gana Parishad, said the land in the hands of the Assamese people is decreasing. He called for a movement to stop the sale of land.

The protestors sent a memorandum signed by the presidents and secretaries of the Bamunigaon Anchalik Rabha Students' Union, Chhaygaon Anchalik Students' Union, Chowdhurykhat, Kavaimari, South Bankakata, Belguri, and Dhawargaon Lat Land Conservation Committee to the Chief Minister.
