SARUPATHAR: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) along with 30 other indigenous organizations took out a massive protest rally against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill in Sarupathar on Saturday. AASU activists, along with activists of several organizations of Dhansiri subdivision, obstructed traffic by staging massive protests with placards in their hands and demanded the withdrawal of the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Raju Phukan, AASU organizing secretary of Dhansiri subdivision, said that the agitation against the controversial Bill would be relentless unless it was withdrawn by the Central Government as it poses a grave threat to the identity of indigenous communities in the State. He also added, “Life in Assam has been hit badly since the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha as street protests continue against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.” He also threatened the BJP-led government at the Centre and Sarbananda Sonowal government of Assam that if the citizenship bill was passed then Assam would burn. “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill should be scrapped since it is a threat to the culture, language, land, and identity of Assamese people,” he said.

Some prominent people of Sarpathar said, “Normal life has been crippled in Assam, including Dhansiri subdivision in Golaghat district, following bandhs and protests called by several organizations demanding the withdrawal of the citizenship bill. Both the Central and State government have seemingly turned indifferent towards the indigenous people of Assam.”

They added, “The peace and social harmony in Assam have been put to the test of time with multi-directional polarization taking place amongst political, non-political and people’s groups over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that has been proposed by the BJP-led government at the Centre and endorsed by the ruling BJP party in Assam.”

Activists of Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS), All Tai-Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU) and other organizations of Dhansiri subdivision also protested against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
