SILCHAR: With barely 100 picketers and a posse of police force, the nationwide general strike died its inevitable death within an hour in Silchar. Groups of volunteers were seen in the early morning at various points of the city trying to block the roads, but as the clock ticked toward office and college hours, the demonstrations tended to fizzle out. The main demonstration, held near the Khudiram statue point leading to the Deputy Commissioner's office, was cleared off by police within half an hour. Barring a few, almost all the shops on the main streets were open, though those inside the lanes were closed. Attendance in the government office did not record any descending trend. Private vehicles were seen on the road like any other week days. However, the strike visibly impacted the overall traffic movement in Silchar as the number of vehicles coming from villages as well as from the neighbouring districts dropped significantly.
