KOKRAJHAR: Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Irrigation, Guwahati Development department and Guardian Minister of Kokrajhar district ,Ashok Singhal on Sunday formally distributed the cheques to 5,000 beneficiaries of first category who were regularly repaying under the Assam Micro Finance Incentive and Relief Scheme (AMFIRS) in a programme held at the BTC Secretariat field, Bodofa Nwgwr in Kokrajhar.

As per the programme, in her introductory address, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka informed that in the first category, the district had set a target of providing cheques to 5,000 women of the district who had regularly repaid loans and the remaining women would also be given cheques in phase manner. During the Minister Ashok Singhal formally launched the scheme in the district by distributing 15 cheques to woman beneficiaries in the presence of Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Pramod Boro and other dignatories.

In his address, Minister Ashok Singhal said that a total of 5,000 beneficiaries would be benefited in Kokrajhar district in the first phase under AMFIRS and about 19,000 women beneficiaries in the district had been selected for the scheme and the same would be given in phases. He said that the present State Government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had been focusing more on women empowerment since coming in to the power in the state. "The society can move forward only if women are self-reliant," he added.

Addressing the meeting, BTC CEM Pramod Boro said that the scheme would play a significant role in making women in the State self-reliant and empowered. He also said that the work had been possible due to the strong steps taken by the Assam Government and it was because of the strong efforts of the Chief Minister that development had taken place in Assam as well as BTR.
