Minor girl rescued, 3 arrested by Sonitpur police
A 13-year-old trafficked Tezpur girl was rescued by Sonitpur police from Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh.
TEZPUR: A 13-year-old trafficked Tezpur girl was rescued by Sonitpur police from Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh. She was sold in Arunachal Pradesh for Rs 1 lakh.
The minor girl was rescued from a house where she was held captive and was forced into slavery. The operation was carried out by a team of Sonitpur police led by SI Jafir Hussain under the supervision of SP Sonitpur, Dr Dhananjay Ghanawat and Additional SP (HQ) Madhurima Das.
Briefing the media, Madhurima Das said that during the operation three persons were arrested. The arrested persons have been identified as Dul Baruah, Pravin Khandwal and his wife Sumi Khandwal of Gingia in Biswanath Chariali district. She further said that the minor girl had been missing since September 5 and family members had lodged a missing compliant with Tezpur police station. A case vide Tezpur PS case no 1926/21 U/S 366, 370 of the IPC was registered in this connection.
During the investigation, it was found that Pravin Khandwal and his wife Sumi Khandwal of Gingia in Biswanath Chariali district, had trafficked the girl and sold her in Arunachal Pradesh for an amount of Rs 1 lakh. The police also recovered Rs 48,000 from their possession, she added.
Trafficking of teenage girls from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh has been going on rampantly for quite some time now. Sources reveal that human traffickers lure young girls with the promise of a better life and education and traffic them to the neighbouring States. In most cases, these teenage girls are sold in Arunachal Pradesh by human traffickers and the girls end up working in households.
