NAGAON: A person accused of stealing multiple mobile phones tried to flee from police custody and was caught shortly after that. The incident took place in the Raha region of the Nagaon district of the state on Thursday.

The incident took place near Raha Higher Secondary School which comes under the Raha police station of the state. The alleged thief identified as Nurul Haque ( 22 years old ) was arrested by the Raha police on Thursday morning after a complaint of phone theft was lodged against him. He is said to belong to the Chalchali region of Nagaon. He was being taken to the Raha Ranthali Civil Hospital when he tried to escape from the police vehicle.

Police sources said, "We took the accused to the hospital for his medical checkup. We were about to cross police barricades near Raha H. S. School when all of a sudden he jumped out of the vehicle and fled. We immediately caught him and he is now in our custody."

The situation turned tense in the Badarpur region in the Karinganj district of Assam after a video showed the officer in charge of the Badarpur police station engaged in a verbal battle with a person before forcefully taking the person into the police station. They also blocked NH 37 demanding the immediate transfer of the officer in charge of the police station. The situation turned worse when the protesters blocked several key roads in the town. The limited number of police personnel present in the area tried to take control of the situation but soon found themselves in a helpless situation. Multiple local people had also put in complaints regarding the alleged misbehaviour of the police official towards the members of the general public over the recent time.
