MORIGAON: "Morigaon District of Assam has the potential to curve a niche in self-sufficiency. Considering its available resources, the district can be made a model, if all the stakeholders put in a concerted effort in the fields of Agriculture, Fishery, and Horticulture. On this 34th Morigaon District Day, let us pledge ourselves to work more towards the development of the district." These were the observations of Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi while speaking at a function organized to celebrate the district day in Morigaon on Saturday, stated a press release.

Governor Prof. Mukhi said, that Morigaon district with its history, cultural heritage, demography and geography has created a diverse landscape of ecology co-existing with economy. Bounded by the mighty Brahmaputra and other important rivers crisscrossing the district, the landscape of the district provides the life giving prosperity to a large section of the people representing varied culture, traditions and ethnicity. He said that he felt happy that the district stands firmly to represent the aims and aspirations of its people.

Talking about his affiliation with Morigaon, the Governor said, "I bear a soft corner for the district and its people as I have adopted the district as a model district three years back and I believe that the district has the potential to grow and develop in every field. Moreover, under the present Chief Minister, several development activities are being put into place to help Morigaon to develop into a model district very soon."

Prof. Mukhi also spoke on the contribution of the people of Morigaon in the country's freedom struggle. He also mentioned the names of the martyrs Tilak Deka, Hem Ram Patar, Gunabhiram Bordoloi, Mahada Nanda Goswami and others who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of their motherland. He also paid his rich tributes to them on the occasion of district day.

Minister of Water Resources, Parliamentary affairs etc Pijush Hazarika present on the occasion said that under the able guidance of Chief Minister the district has got new momentum in terms of development. The government is paying special attention to the overall development of the district which includes, road infrastructure, addressing the issues of flood and erosion, beautification of the district etc. Minister of Handlooms and Textiles Urkhao Gwra Brahma also spoke on the occasion .

The celebration of Morigaon District Day was attended by MLA Ramakant Deuri, Deputy Commissioner, Morigaon district Devasish Sharma, Secretary to Governor Swapna Dutta Deka along with a host of other dignitaries. Later, the Governor also unveiled a bust of the freedom fighter Mahadananda Deva Goswami.
