SILCHAR: In its continued operation against drug syndicate, Cachar police on Saturday night recovered contraband substances which was reportedly of morphine composition. Sonai and Kachudaram police in a joint drive recovered 872 grams of morphine from Bowali area in Motinagar. Police arrested one Laishrom Ramjoy Singh, 51, a resident of Manipur. Singh had confessed that he bought the substances here for trading. Price of the narcotic substances was estimated as Rs 1 crore in the international market.

Morphine is an opiate usually used to relive pain. But it is often used as a substance of addiction as consuming morphine provides an euphoric feeling. In stead of its remedial feature, morphine has high potential of abuse for its pleasurable effect.

Barak Valley, sharing both international and inter-state borders is a safe passage for smuggling rackets. In recent times police had intensified drive against drug mafia. Almost every day narcotic substances like ganja, brown sugar, Burmese supari and cigarettes are seized. But recovery of morphine is an eye opener for the police too as smuggling of such deadly narcotic substance is indeed alarming.
