DIGBOI: The Muharram committees on Sunday afternoon jointly organized Taziya in Digboi on the auspicious occasion of Muharram. Processions of Taziya, a miniature symbolic tomb, were held throughout the Oil town starting from Golai Masjid.
Muharram is one of the four sacred Islamic months, during which fighting is traditionally forbidden. The day also marked the 10th day, known as Ashura, which holds deep significance for the people of the Islamic community.
The Muharram committees from Golai, railway station area, and Borbil took part in the processions wherein the mourners marked the Day of Ashura after fasting, Quran recitation, and ritual enactments of the Karbala battle, with some performing symbolic swordplay or self-flagellation.
According to Asraf Raja Khan alias Guddu Khan, one of the active social activists of the community, these public displays reflect both Shia traditions (mourning, processions with taziyas, chest-beating, acting out Karbala scenes) and Sunni practices (fasting and prayers), showcasing the community’s shared homage to Imam Hussain’s martyrdom.
Following significant planning and engagement of security agencies, the event concluded peacefully.
