MANGALDAI: A total of 88 candidates have filed their nominations for election to the three municipality boards- Mangaldai, Kharupetia and Sipajhar in Darrang district. These three municipalities consist of 31 wards in all and 58 polling stations.

Mangaldai Municipality has 10 wards with maximum of 24 polling stations while in Kharupetia the number of polling stations will be 21 against 11 wards, increased from the earlier eight. The newly-created Sipajhar Municipality with 10 wards has the minimum of 13 polling stations. On the last day of filing of nominations on Tuesday, all the 88 candidates filed their nominations.

Maximum 32 nominations filed for Mangaldai followed by 31 for Kharupetia and 25 for Sipajhar. The ruling BJP, which has gone into the polls sharing seats with AGP, fielded total of 25 candidates i.e 9 for Kharupetia and 8 each for Mangaldai and Sipajhar. INC having its party MLA in Mangaldai LAC, fielded candidates in all the 10 wards of Mangaldai Municipality while in case of Kharupetia and Sipajhar, the party is contesting only in four seats each. AGP is contesting in 2 seats in each of the three municipalities.

Surprisingly, AIUDF which has an MLA in Dalgaon LAC, has abstained from fielding a single candidate in Kharupetia which is the only municipality of the assembly constituency. On the other hand, as many as 16 independent candidates filed their nominations for Kharupetia while in Mangaldai and Sipajhar, the figure stands at 12 and 11 respectively.
