KOKRAJHAR: A grand mass gathering of United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO) was held at North Guwahati College playground on Sunday. It was organized by the Guwahati district committee of UBPO and chaired by Holiram Boro, president of the Guwahati district UBPO.

Talking to The Sentinel, the general secretary of the UBPO, Anil Basumatary said that the ordinance for creation of Boro Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) for BoroKachari people living outside BTC would be brought any time soon. He said that they were holding public meetings in Boro Kachari inhabited districts and places across Assam to make people aware about the latest developments on formation of the new autonomous council.

Basumatary said the UBPO had submitted names of 2,076 Boro Kachari villages, that include some Reang villages of Barak Valley, to the Government of Assam for inclusion in BKWAC. He said the total population of these villages would be 6,59,000. The Boro Kachari villages of Sonitpur, Biswanath, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts have not been included as villages of Sonitpur and Biswanath will be clubbed with BTR and being under Sixth Schedule administration, the Boro villages of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao will also not be included in BKWAC, he said, adding that the total population of Boro Kachari people will be over 10,00,000 if villages of the four districts are included. He also said that they had received tremendous response from the BoroKachari people over the proposed formation of BKWAC outside BTC as it would ensure all-round development, besides protection of political rights of the indigenous tribal people of Assam. The meeting was also addressed by the president of UBPO, Mihiniswar Basumatary and attended by leaders of the central committee, UBPO.
