National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau urges appointment of AHRC chairperson

JAMUGURIHAT: The role of the State Human Rights Commission, Assam in providing the necessary leadership and guidance to provide social justice to the people of Assam as well as to protect the fundamental rights is immense. The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB), Assam has expressed concern over the non-appointment of the chairperson as well as the full body, who are the main enablers of protecting human rights.

The state chairman of NHRCCB, Nishant Thard, in a statement sent through State Media Officer Mrinmay Kumar Nath residing in Jamugurihat, said that the organization has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court seeking necessary step in this regard. The NHRCCB, Assam in the press release said that when the organization decided to contact the chairperson of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to attend its state convention held recently in Guwahati as the chief guest, it was confirmed that the Commission is running without the chairperson and its full body at present.

Nishant Thard, chairman of the NHRCCB, expressed surprise when he came to know about the matter. Without a permanent chairperson, how have the Assam State Human Rights Commission’s actions been implemented? Thard raises an important question. He also mentioned that the appointment of a chairperson and constitution of the full body is necessary not only for the smooth functioning of the Commission but also to rectify the current situation. So, it is considered very important to take immediate action in this regard.

The National Human Rights and Criminal Control Bureau has urged the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to take appropriate measures to ensure the early appointment of a suitable person in the respected post along with the full body of the Commission. The NHRCCB feels that the absence of the chairman and non-formation of the full body severely hampers the Commission’s ability to carry out its orders with efficiency, which is a noticeable aspect of the Assam Human Rights Commission. This will not only erode the credibility of the Commission but also deprive the victims of access to justice. The appointment of a Chairperson and formation of its body will not only protect the rights of the people of Assam but will also be considered as an appropriate mechanism for restoring the integrity and functioning of the Assam State Human Rights Commission.
