Haflong: Setting February 16 as deadline for the payment of compensation, the N C Hills Indigenous Students’ Forum (NCHISF) and Indigenous Women Forum (IWF) have threatened indefinite rail blockade from February 17.

At a press meet held on Saturday in the office of NCHISF, the president of NCHISF, David Keivom said that they had called for blockade from March 7 to March 9, 2019 but called it off after receiving invitation from the Chief Minister for discussion. On March 11, 2019, under the chairman ship of the Chief Minister, a joint meeting was held in Guwahati to discuss the compensation. In the meeting, the Chief Minister had directed the General Manager, NF Railway to pay all the necessary compensation and the General Manager had given assurance that he would do it.

Keivom further said that they again approached the Chief Minister on November 21, 2019 and he again reminded the Railway authority to release the compensation. The Railway authority had given assurance that they would release the compensation amount but till date no payment had been made. The General Manager had earlier given assurance that they would release the compensation after the submission of the joint survey report but more than a year had passed and yet no compensation was paid.

“It seems that the Railway authority has no respect for the Chief Minister and we have no option but to launch an agitation programme. The NCHISF and IWF should not be held responsible for this,” said the NCHISF president.
