GUWAHATI: A new toll gate is likely to get operational soon near the Bogibeel bridge that provides road connectivity among the districts of Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji in Assam and also people from Arunachal Pradesh.

According to reports, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Assam government are speeding up to make operational the proposed toll gate.

In the meanwhile, the authorities have been constructing a toll plaza near the bridge spending around Rs. 10 crores.

The construction work of the toll plaza will complete soon. Citing to garner the maintenance cost of the highways which pass through the state the NHAI has been setting up the toll gate and defies opposition from the local people as well as several organizations.

Local people expressed concern that the motor would increase once the toll plaza is launched.

"We have not seen any reason behind the opening of a toll plaza in Bogibeel. It would increase the hardships of the people who have been suffering a lot due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We demand the government and NHAI repeal their decision," said a local organization leader.

Earlier in September 2021, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) staged a protest against the construction of a toll gate at Bogibeel bridge south bank approach road in Dibrugarh.

Members of AASU Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, and Lakhimpur units protested for over two hours, disrupting traffic on the busy highway. The members, holding placards and banners, raised slogans against the government to bring attention to the cause.

"Patients coming from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur to Dibrugarh for treatment will face a problem if the toll gate is erected. This is not a four-lane... then why is the government setting up a toll gate here? We want the removal of the same", AASU Dibrugarh unit president Abani Kumar Gogoi said.
