GUWAHATI: The National Investigation Agency NIA has filed a chargesheet before a special court in Guwahati on Friday against three National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-S) militants for their alleged involvement in carrying out an ambush in 2014.

The ambush led to the death of Gulzar Hussain, the then ASP (Sonitpur), and a civilian Anlark Basumatary. Several other police personnel were also injured in the attack.

In 2014, Hussain was returning from a night-long operation against the NDFB(S) in a dense jungle area on the Assam-Arunachal border when the police convoy was ambushed in Mauriapur village, under Dhekiajuli police station. It was considered as one of the worst attack by the breakaway Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

As per a statement issued the three accused Bishnu Narzary, Nitul Daimary and Runiluish Diamary were charged under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, with various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act.

Initially, a case was registered on January 28, 2014 at Dhekiajuli Police Station under Sonitpur District in connection to an ambush which resulted in the death of Gulzar Hussain, the then ASP (Sonitpur), and a civilian Anlark Basumatary and injured many.

On August 2, 2019, the NIA has re-registered the case and took over the probe in the case, that revealed that the ambush was carried out by the NDFB-S militants.

Two of the accused named in the chargesheet -- Narzary and Nitul Daimary -- have been convicted in another case, in which the former has been given a death sentence while the latter has been sentenced to life imprisonment, said the statement.

The statement further stated that two other NDFB cadres, Kham Kham Daimary and Junu Basumatary who were also involved in the crime, have already been killed in separate encounters with security forces.

Further investigations are being carried out in this case.
