MANGALDAI: The drama created by the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) over projection of two candidates in 67 Mangaldai (SC) LAC came to a tragic end with the cancellation of the candidature of both the candidates during the scrutiny of nomination papers on Monday.

Moti Lal Mandal, who submitted his nomination papers along with xerox copy of party ticket, failed to produce the original party ticket before the Returning Officer. Another AIUDF candidate, Ajoy Kumar Roy too failed to enclose the duly filled affidavit sworn in before the Notary which led to the cancellation of his nomination papers.

Immediately after filing the nomination papers on March 12, Ajoy Kumar Roy of AIUDF had lodged an FIR at Mangaldai Police Station alleging that the letter bearing the party nomination was snatched from him in the DC's office and he had accused AIUDF general secretary and candidate in Dalgaon LAC, Majibur Rahman and two others. The AIUDF had projected their candidates defying the grand alliance of Congress, AIUDF and BPF.

Another independent candidate, Ranendra Kumar Sarkar in 67 Mangaldai (SC) LAC too failed to produce the required documents leading to cancellation of his nomination papers.

With the cancellation of nomination papers of three candidates in 67 Mangaldai (SC) LAC, only four candidates will contest in the poll battle in the second phase on April 1 if no one withdraws their nomination papers on March 17-the date fixed for withdrawal of nomination papers. As no cancellation of nomination papers has been reported in three other constituencies, namely 65 Kalaigaon, 66 Sipajhar and 68 Dalgaon LAC of Darrang district, a total of 32 candidates in the district will appear in the poll.
