TINSUKIA: "Northeast tops the list, recording highest rates of human trafficking in India and most vulnerable area in the country. While man are trafficked for body organ trade, women and girls are trafficked by agents through false promises of jobs, marriage, better living standards and subjected them to diversified forms of exploitation such as prostitution, servitude etc." remarked Juri Borah Borgohain, eminent writer and author of several novels while delivering a lecture on 'Women Trafficking in North East India' on the occasion of International Women's Day at Tinsukia College on Friday.

Organised by the Cell for Women's Studies and Development (CWSD) Tinsukia College in collaboration with IQAC Cell, the lecture programme drew attention of several hundred students beside teachers and guests. Borgohain said that neo-imperialism was the main reason of trafficking in North-East India unlike other mainland states witnessed direct advancement from paddy field to 4G without passing through intermediate phases and due to this reason, she maintained that the simple minded people of North East fall prey easily to traffickers. She further warned the student community particularly girls should not trust anybody other than her own parents. She viewed that her experiences revealed that 4 classes of people namely close relatives, friends, vendors and advertising agencies act as agents in the trafficking.

The programme also witnessed a close interaction with students and teachers. Earlier Rana Kumar Changmai Principal of college spoke about the main theme and its relevance in local context. The 4th edition of Eeksha an annual periodical of CWSD and edited by Dr Dipeeka Bhattacharjee was released on the occasion. While Dr Ruby Boruah and Rasmita Borkotoky jointly anchored the programme, Dr Pallavi Gogoi read out the biography of Juri Borah Borgohain.
