DIBRUGARH: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the Northeast’s first emergency aircraft landing facility, at Moran Bypass, is nearing completion and will be ready by September.
The 4.2-km stretch, part of the Dibrugarh–Moran National Highway, is being developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to enable emergency landings of both civilian and military aircraft, including advanced fighter jets like Rafale and Sukhoi.
“In case of an emergency where Dibrugarh Airport cannot be used, this strip will serve as a vital alternative,” CM Sarma said during his site visit. He added that the facility will also benefit residents living near the bypass.
Highlighting public engagement, CM Sarma said a fighter jet air show is being planned in collaboration with the IAF on the day of inauguration to showcase the capability of the landing strip.
CM Sarma also confirmed that two more such emergency landing facilities will be developed in lower and central Assam — one between Tihu and Barama and another between Nagaon and Lumding. “This is a strategic step to boost both national security and disaster preparedness in the region,” CM Sarma said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar to assess the ongoing waterlogging problem. Accompanying him were MLA Akhil Gogoi, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, and Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Ayush Garg.
