Noted academician Dr Birendra Nath Borthakur passes away in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH: Former professor of Dibrugarh University, academician, renowned social activist and writer Dr Birendra Nath Borthakur passed away at the age of 75 at hospital in Dibrugarh on June 10.

Birendra Nath Borthakur was born in June 28, 1946 in Jorhat. He completed his studies from Jorhat College and later from Dibrugarh University. He stood first class first in MA from Dibrugarh University. He was a professor of Sociology at Dibrugarh University from 1974-2009. In 1991 he completed his PhD from Dibrugarh University.

Borthakur was a former Dean at Kaziranga University. He mentored many students at Dibrugarh University and Kaziranga University. Around 20 students received PhD under his guidance. He was an avid writer who wrote many books – Reading on India, North-East Socio-Economic Development, Family, Kinship and caste in the growth of Assamese Entrepreanureship etc.

Borthakur was a former president of Milan Jyoti Sangha, a scio-cultural organization of Dibrugarh. He also obtained Emeritus fellowship from UGC in 2012. He also acted in two Assamese films Mudhachanda and Osenai. He directed 50 documentaries for Dibrugarh Doordarshan and Guwahati Doordarshan.

He leaves behind his wife Mamata Borthakur, renowned artist, and his son with host of relatives. Former president of Axam Xahitya Xabha, Dr Nagen Saikia and various social organizations condoled the demise of Birendra Nath Borthakur.
