Noted actor and ex-state cricketer Rajen Sarma passes away in Guwahati

NAGAON: Rajen Sarma, a former state cricketer and noted film actor and drama activist, passed away at the age of 82 at a private hospital in Guwahati today.

Sarma was known for his exceptional skills in cricket and football, representing Assam in the Cooch Behar Trophy cricket tournament and the Assam school football team.

Sarma was an accomplished wicketkeeper in cricket and a skilled goalkeeper in football. Apart from sports, he established himself as a talented actor, featuring in several plays and films, including ‘Maram Trishna,’ ‘Maniram Dewan,’ and ‘Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati.’ He also served as the secretary and president of the Nagaon Natya Samiti and was an advisor to the Star Sporting Club, a prominent sports organization in Nagaon.

 The news of Sarma’s demise sent shockwaves through the small town, with many paying tribute to his contributions to sports and theatre. Local MLA Rupak Sarma expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family. Other notable figures, including former MLA Girindra Kumar Baruah, Star Sporting Club members, and various cultural and sports organizations, Nagaon Press Club, and district unit of All Assam Journalists’ Union also condoled his demise.

Sarma’s mortal remains were taken to the Nagaon Natya Samiti premises after being brought back to his residence, where people from various walks of life paid their last respects. His final rites were performed at the Nagaon crematorium, with his daughter Pallavi Sarma performing the last rituals. Sarma is survived by his wife, Indira Sarma, three daughters, and grandchildren.
