Guwahati: In a bid to reinforce urban cleanliness and promote environmental responsibility, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has intensified its crackdown on improper waste disposal practices, imposing monetary penalties on individuals and establishments found flouting sanitation norms.

As part of the ongoing enforcement drive under the Swachh Bharat Mission, a housing colony was fined Rs 2,000 for illegally dumping borewell sludge into a public drain, an act deemed hazardous to both the drainage system and public health. In a separate incident, officials levied a fine of Rs 4,000 on violators at TRP Road for disposing of garbage along the roadside.

GMC officials have reiterated their commitment to maintaining hygiene across the city, warning that strict action will continue against violators. “We are actively monitoring waste disposal across Guwahati. Residents and establishments are urged to follow proper procedures or face penalties,” said a GMC official.

The civic body has ramped up surveillance and enforcement in recent weeks as part of a broader effort to improve sanitation standards and curb open dumping. Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate by segregating waste, using designated bins, and avoiding hazardous disposal practices. With urban waste management becoming a pressing concern, GMC’s recent measures aim to underline that cleanliness is a collective responsibility and that negligence will attract consequences.
