NRL Expansion Nears Completion; Bio-Ethanol Project Progresses in Numaligarh

BOKAKHAT: Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), dedicated to the nation on July 9, 1999, has established itself as a significant industrial entity in India. Approved on April 22, 1993, with an initial refining capacity of three million metric tons per year, the refinery has undertaken various projects to contribute to the state’s development.

To enhance profitability and growth, the refinery is expanding its refining capacity to six million metric tons per year. Additionally, the Assam Bio-Refinery Private Limited (ABRPL) bio-refinery ethanol project is a key initiative. The plan to further increase the refining capacity to nine million metric tons per year has already received approval from the central government, with an investment of Rs 33,901 crore.

Numaligarh Refinery and Chempolis Oy & Associates will jointly establish a bamboo-based bio-ethanol project in Numaligarh, with an estimated cost of Rs 950 crore. Production for this project was expected to commence earlier this year. Both projects have made notable progress. The bio-ethanol project aims to process 300,000 metric tons of bamboo annually and produce 49,000 metric tons of ethanol, along with other chemical byproducts.

The refinery’s expansion work has progressed beyond 88%, and high-level sources at the refinery confirm that it is expected to be completed by December this year. Advanced machinery and technology have already been imported from abroad for this expansion. Once completed, the refinery will be considered one of the major industries of the state, significantly accelerating Assam’s economic development.
