Pankaj Barkakaty, a retired subject teacher and pioneer of Assam Agitation and erstwhile a resident of New centre, Sootea breathed his last at his Mission Chariali residence on Sunday. He was 69. Barkakaty was the first General Secretary of the Sootea regional committee of AASU in 1972. He joined the food movement in 1974 and was jailed for 12 days. A master degree holder, Barkakaty had joined as a lecturer at Chatia College and taught students during its venture period.

He was one of the crew members of the 16-member executive body of the Asom Gana Sangram Parishad and a close companion of the Late Nibaran Bora and Atul Bora. He leaped into the Assam Agitation Movement. Later, he joined Bihaguri HSS and attained superannuation from there. He held the office of the General Secretary of Sonitpur District Secondary Sub-Teachers’ Association.

At the later part of his life, he shifted to Mission Chariali and settled therein though he didn’t forget his roots with Sootea and maintained a good social relation with many socio-cultural organizations of the greater Sootea area till his last breath. Organizations and individuals of the greater Sootea area expressed pain in his demise. He leaves behind his wife, three daughters along with other relatives.
