Panchayat Elections: Model code of conduct enforced in Morigaon district

Morigaon: The State Election Commission has announced the date for the Panchayat Elections 2025, and the Model Code of Conduct has already come into force in the Gaon Panchayat areas under Morigaon district. The Morigaon District Commissioner and District Election Officer, Devashish Sharma, briefed reporters on the preparations for the panchayat elections in the district at the meeting room of the District Commissioner’s office on Friday.

He said the Morigaon district administration is continuing its efforts to hold healthy and fair elections. Once the Model Code of Conduct comes into force, the administration, police, flying squads, static surveillance teams, expenditure monitoring committees, and various cells will be on alert to prevent violations. He sought the cooperation of the people through the media to conduct healthy and fair elections.

“The final decision on the venues where the votes will be counted has not yet been taken,” he said, adding that the matter would be announced in a few days. He also mentioned that 5,346 officers and employees will be recruited for the election process, with a 10 percent reservation. Additional District Commissioner Dr. Sangita Barthakur briefed journalists on the election preparations in the district.

The second phase of the panchayat elections will be held on May 7 in Morigaon district, the State Election Commission announced. Voting will take place from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, and counting of votes will begin on May 11 at 8 am.

The total number of voters in Morigaon district for the panchayat elections is 7,00,430. Of these, 3,54,785 are male voters, 3,45,632 are female voters, and 13 are third-gender voters. A total of 972 polling stations will be set up in Morigaon district for the elections. Morigaon district has 12 Zila Parishad constituencies, 5 Anchalik Panchayats, 84 Gaon Panchayats, and 840 wards.

Nominations will be accepted from April 3 to April 11, between 11 am and 3 pm in Morigaon district. Nominations will be examined on April 12, and the list of valid candidates will be announced on the same day. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until 3 pm on April 15, after which the final list of candidates will be released.

Candidates from Mayang, Jagibhakatgaon, Deoshal, and Dharamtul Zila Parishad constituencies can file their nomination papers at the Jagiroad Equal-District Office at Jagibhakatgaon. Candidates from Bhuragaon, Rajagadhawa, Mairabari, and Laharighat Zila Parishad constituencies can file their nomination papers at the Laharighat Co-District Office at Rajagadhawa. Similarly, candidates for Kushtali-Nij Gerua, Bhurbandha, Dandua, and Charaibahi-Chabukdhara Zila Parishad constituencies can file their nomination papers at the Morigaon District Commissioner’s office.

The expenditure limit for Gaon Panchayat members is Rs 25,000, for Anchalik Panchayat members Rs 2,50,000, and for Zila Parishad members Rs 10,00,000. This year, the voting process for the panchayat elections will be conducted through ballot papers.
