TEZPUR: Water Resources, Information & Public Relations Minister and Guardian Minister of Sonitpur district, Pijush Hazarika, chaired a comprehensive review meeting on Monday at the conference hall of the District Commissioner’s Office in Sonitpur. The meeting focused on the implementation progress of key government schemes such as Orunodoi 3.0, Mukhyamantrir Atmanirbhar Asom, and the Women Entrepreneurship Campaign.
The meeting was attended by MLAs Prithiraj Rava, Krishna Kamal Tanti, Ganesh Kumar Limbu, officials from the district administration, and members of the district monitoring committees formed for the implementation of these schemes.
During the meeting, Minister Hazarika emphasized that all eligible beneficiaries, especially from the most deserving sections of society, must benefit from these welfare initiatives. He urged all stakeholders to ensure that no qualified individual is left out, and to maintain a transparent, inclusive, and time-bound execution of the schemes. He also instructed the Deputy Commissioner to closely monitor the progress and ensure timely completion of all tasks under these schemes as envisioned by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Later in the day, the Water Resources Minister visited Balipara in the district to inspect ongoing anti-erosion and embankment strengthening works undertaken by the Water Resources Department at the Jarasar River. The Digholi-Balijan village under Naduar LAC in Balipara has faced severe erosion and flooding due to the river’s rising waters overflowing the embankment in past monsoons.
In a proactive effort to mitigate the twin challenges of riverbank erosion and recurring floods in the region, the Water Resources Department has undertaken a major embankment strengthening project. As part of this initiative, Minister Pijush Hazarika, accompanied by MLAs Padma Hazarika and Krishna Kamal Tanti, visited the site to personally review the progress of the ongoing works and engage with the local population to gain firsthand insights into the situation.
To bolster the river embankment and prevent further degradation, the department is installing approximately 1,200 meters of Geo Mega Tubes, a modern and effective method known for its durability and resilience against strong water currents. During the interaction with residents, Minister Hazarika stated that the installation of these advanced Geo Mega Tubes would greatly fortify the embankment, significantly reducing the risk of future flooding and erosion. He expressed confidence that, once completed, the reinforced structure will offer long-term protection to nearby villages and agricultural land, bringing much-needed relief to the people of the area.
