BAKSA: Pijush Hazarika, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Assam, on Wednesday was greeted by a large number of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) protesters in Tamulpur under Baksa district where he had gone to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the BTC poll to be held in two phases on December 7 and December 10.

Pijush Hazarika, who came to Gandhibari under No. 28 Goibari BTC constituency to campaign for BJP candidate Hementa Kumar Rabha, who is contesting from the No. 28 Goibari BTC constituency, was confronted by protesters who staged a demonstration against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and price hike.

Protesters of AASU and AJYCP held black flags and banners and shouted slogans. They made their presence felt by clanging traditional cymbals, one of the instruments used in Assamese cultural and religious events, and utensils. Some of the protesters also wore garlands made of onions and potatoes signifying price rise.

Despite the loud protests, Pijush Hazarika appeared in a public meeting at Gandhibari and said that the Hagrama Mohilary-led BTC council had done nothing in the past 17 years except indulging in corruption. "So the people of BTC will never accept BPF and will cast votes in favour of BJP. The BJP will win the BTC poll with absolute majority. After the BJP forms the government in BTC, there will be inquiry in all departments, especially the Department of Food and Civil Supply, and corrupt persons will be punished according to the law," he said.

Hazarika urged people to cast their votes in favour of the BJP. He participated in five election campaign meetings at No. 28 Goibari constituency in Baksa.
