JAMUGURIHAT: The piles of temporary garbage thrown by the residents of the Sootea town area is creating a threat to the surrounding environment. The shore of the Mornoi river that flows in the middle of Sootea town across NH 15 has become a dumping zone for the residents at present. The foul smell that comes from the temporary dumping ground irks the commuters. The Sootea Town Committee which was constituted a year ago has adopted no scientific measures to extract the garbage of the town area. The garbage of the business establishments, household garbage of the local resident and the waste particles of the daily market are thrown into the river side of Mornoi unscientifically. The town committee has not installed any dust bins and there is no system for collection of waste materials. The tiny river would soon have vanished from existence if the temporary dumping site had not been relocated right away. The Mornoi river connects both Sootea new centre and Sootea old centre as well. Both the shores of the river are piled up by the hills of garbage. The foul smell that comes from the extracts thrown by the meat and fish vendors creates a suffocative environment in that area. There are two markets that come under the jurisdiction of Sootea Town Committee. They are Sootea weekly market and Sootea daily market. Similarly, the pond which is located inside the weekly market of Sootea is seen polluted due to throwing of plastics and garbage by the residents and owners of hotels of the area.

But till date, the town committee has adopted no scientific measure to sort out the issue concerning our environment. It is pertinent to mention here that there are guidelines issued by the central and State government as well for Waste Management including Assam Urban Solid Waste Management Policy, 2018, Swachh Bharat Mission, Solid Waste Management (SWM) etc. But Sootea Town Committee has adopted no policies for collection of garbage, segregation, recycling and decomposition of garbage applying scientific measures. The residents and the conscious people and residents of the town area have made a humble appeal to the authorities concerned to look into the matter and to take immediate action to mitigate the issue relating to the environment.
