JAMUGURIHAT: The Itakhola outpost under Sootea police station of Biswanath district, which is located to the north of Jamugurihat, has remained as an outpost for nearly 30 years. The outpost was established in the year 1990 as a patrol post under Sootea PS as per the demand made by the local people.

The then Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur district instructed for immediate installation of a patrol post at Itakhola. Years later, the Itakhola patrol post was upgraded to Itakhola outpost. Howver, even after 30 years of establishment, the Itakhola outpost has not been upgraded to a full- fledged police station. The patrol post was started in a room of Uttar Nagsankar GP temporarily during the initial days. There is no permanent building and office for the outpost. There are only two ordinary rooms; one used as an office, another as a detainment room for accused persons.

A vast area under Sootea LAC comes under the jurisdiction of this outpost. Further, the outpost is located in the Assam-Arunachal border. Cases of extremist activities, anti-social activities, extortion and smuggling are common in this area. In such a situation, the outpost should be upgraded to a full- fledged police station and a permanent building for the same is the need of the hour.

The people of the greater Itakhola area have appealed to the Superintendent of Police, the Assam Police and the State Government to upgrade the Itakhola outpost to a police station.
