BISWANATH CHARIALI: The National Poshan Month and Matru Vandana Week were launched at a function held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Biswanath recently at the initiative of the Social Welfare Department in association with the district administration.

The event was inaugurated by Biswanath MLA Pramod Borthakur and Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Conducting the programme, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Social Welfare) Lisa Talukdar explained the significance of National Poshan Month and Matru Vandana Week. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Pramod Borthakur said that the good health of the child helped in making the child a good citizen. It is with this objective in mind that the Government of India has organized National Poshan Month and Matru Vandana Week.

Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah in his speech said that Poshan Abhiyan was being carried out to improve the health of children between the ages of 0 and 6 years. Malnutrition of mothers and children is a major problem for the society at present and awareness has to be created among the people through gaon sabhas.

Speaking at the meeting, District Social Welfare Officer (in-charge) Sangeeta Borthakur said that National Poshan Month and Matru Vandana Week had been organized to create awareness among the people to remove malnutrition of women and children in the society. Two of the beneficiaries of Prime Minister Matru Vandana Scheme, Reema Saha and Savita Singh Bardhan, respectively, were felicitated by the Social Welfare Department in the programme.

The meeting was also attended by SDO (C) Dwipam Barman, Assistant Commissioners Bhupali Kashyap and Kankana Saikia, District Coordinator (Poshan Abhiyan) Parismita Dutta and others.
