PPMG awardee Inspector Babul Ali passes away in Guwahati

NAGAON: Babul Ali, an armed branch police inspector of Nagaon and recipient of the President's Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG), Babul Ali passed away at a private nursing home in Guwahati on Wednesday morning following a prolonged illness.

Ali was selected for the coveted and most prestigious PPMG award in 1998 for his gallant action. On December 7, 1997 while he was working as the driver of then Nagaon Superintendent of Police, Pradeep Kumar (IPS), an ambush was laid by a group of ULFA militants in the Polasoni area in the outskirts of the town under Nagaon PS. In the ambush, then Superintendent of Police Pradeep Kumar was injured grievously. During the ambush, Babul Ali displayed great valour and drove him safely to a nearest hospital and saved his life.

In the gruesome incident, Babul Ali himself was shot in the leg but with the bleeding leg he drove the Ambassador car safely to the hospital and saved the life of the then SP, Pradeep Kumar.

For this act of gallantry, he was awarded with the PPMG in 1998 by the President of India. On behalf of Assam Police, Nagaon Police paid homage to the departed soul with salami as per procedure at Nagaon Police Reserve.
