Preparations afoot to celebrate Foundation Day of Assam Village Defence Party

DOOMDOOMA: The Asam Gaonrakshi Bahini (Assam Village Defence Party or VDP), formed in 1949 to assist the police in the field of village security, celebrates its foundation day on January 28 and January 29 every year. This day is celebrated centrally at one place in Assam. This year, the government has decided to celebrate the day at Doomdooma in Tinsukia district.

For that, a meeting was held at the Doomdooma Police Station on Sunday to discuss preparations for the foundation day celebrations. The meeting was attended by Minister for Labour Welfare, Tea Tribes and Tribal Welfare and Home Affairs and local MLA Rupesh Gowala, Home and Political Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Bhattacharya, Tinsukia District Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, Tinsukia District Additional District (ADC) Commissioner Arman Ahmed and Doomdooma Co-District Commissioner Nuzhat Nasreen, Chief Adviser of Assam Village Defence Party (VDP) Ranjit Majumdar, Adviser Partha Pratim Das, Tinsukia Sub-Division Adviser Robin Kurmi, Margherita Sub-Division Adviser Bikash Baruah, Doomdooma Chakra Organizer Lakima Mess, and others.

The state programme will be attended by thousands of representatives of village guards from different parts of Assam. The first day will be a delegates’ meeting while the second day will be a cultural procession and an open meeting. The meeting decided to invite the Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma as the chief guest to the opening ceremony.

The meeting also formed a strong reception committee led by Tinsukia District Commissioner Swapneel Paul, Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip and Doomdooma Co-District Commissioner Nuzhat Nasreen. The meeting also formed an editorial Board with former Secretary of Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha  Prakash Dutta and journalist Dinesh Goyal to edit the souvenir to be published on the occasion.

The meeting was attended by Doomdooma Municipal Board (DMB) Chairperson Kanta Bhattacharya, Vice- Chairman Moni Dutta, senior journalist Arjun Baruah, leading gynecologist and social worker Dr Pranab Jyoti Deka, social worker Prakash Dutta, Lalit Gogoi, Kishanlal Pareek, Arup Jyoti Deka, Hamid Khan, and journalist Dinesh Goyal. DMB Ward commissioner Milan Yadav, Doomdooma Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector Manoranjan Saikia, Doomdooma Police Station Citizens Committee President Binod Tati, members Abhijit Khatniar, Dilip Prasad, Tutumani Moran, Zubeir Ahmed and many other dignitaries also participated in the event.
