DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh police have arrested the prime accused, Dibya Jyoti Baruah, in connection with the July 21 firing and assault incident at Ghoramara under the Chabua-Lahowal Assembly constituency. The accused was apprehended with the assistance of Ghoramara outpost and Lahowal police and is currently being held at the Ghoramara police outpost.
According to police, Baruah is the main accused in the violent incident that unfolded on the night of July 21 after an altercation at a roadside dhaba in Lahowal over the parking of a vehicle. Following the dispute, the accused allegedly chased three youths who were travelling towards Dibrugarh on a motorcycle.
Near Ghoramara, the accused reportedly intercepted the motorcycle with a vehicle. As the three youths attempted to flee, one of them was allegedly shot, while the motorcycle carrying the others crashed into a roadside drain.
One of the injured youths later died after sustaining severe head injuries. Investigators suspect that the fatal injuries may have resulted from an assault rather than the motorcycle accident alone. The youth who sustained the gunshot injury remains unable to walk, while another survivor is undergoing treatment for a blood clot in the brain and is expected to require surgery. Police said Dibya Jyoti Baruah has a criminal history, including a pending case under the Arms Act. He is also an accused in the high-profile Dimpi Neog murder case, which is currently under trial.
