KOKRAJHAR: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday attended the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Sabha at Chandrapara in Kokrajhar, reaching out to the public ahead of the BTC elections scheduled for September.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Sarma said that a BJP-led BTC council, backed by BJP governments at the centre and the state, would create a ‘triple-engine government’ capable of accelerating development in the Bodoland region. He noted that many in the BTR still remained deprived of government schemes and facilities, and asserted that only a BJP-led council could ensure these benefits reach the poor, while safeguarding the constitutional rights of all 26 BTC communities and the economically weaker sections.

Sarna assured that a BJP-led BTR government in future would deliver schemes directly to deserving beneficiaries, bypassing ineffective mechanisms. He also pledged that after the formation of a BJP government in BTC, all citizens in the council would be recognized as first-class citizens. Accusing the current Village Council Development Committees (VCDCs) of widespread corruption, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a BJP council to curb such practices.

Responding to a reporter’s question regarding BJP State president and MP Dilip Saikia’s recent remarks against tribal land laws, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that the BJP was not an anti-tribal party. He said that the state government had already initiated a process to form micro tribal belts and blocks in around 600 villages to strengthen protections for tribal communities. He firmly asserted that the government has ‘no intention whatsoever to abolish the tribal belt and block system, not even in dreams.’

The meeting was also addressed by BJP State president Dilip Saikia. Ministers Ashok Singhal and Kaushik Rai, BJP state secretary Pallab Lochan Das, Bijni MLA Ajoy Kumar Ray, and MLA Diplu Ranjan Sarma were among those present, along with several senior leaders, party workers, and supporters.
