KOKRAJHAR: As the first phase of BTC general elections gets underway from December 7 in Udalguri and Baksa districts, various political parties conducted the last leg of campaigning in Kokrajhar and Chirang to woo the voters.

A mega public gathering of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) was held on Sunday at Bismuri in Kokrajhar where several hundreds of people from all communities from the 12 constituencies of Kokrajhar joined to seek change in BTR.

Addressing the grand people's gathering, the president of the UPPL, PromodBoro said that the huge public gathering in the party's meetings had proved the imminent change of guard in BTC and had made the UPPL one of the strongest regional parties. He said that people had come out in support of the UPPL as they wanted corruption-free governance in BTC. The people of the region kept faith in the HagramaMohilary-led Bodoland People's Front (BPF) for the last 17 years but now things had changed, he said.

"A government with dominant attitude will never last long. It has been proved today," said Boro. He said that Mohilary failed to provide security to people and jobs to unemployed youths in the last 17 years. He said the BTR accord had many new clauses, right from higher educational institutions to industries for jobless youths to sustainable economic development. But despite this fact, the BPF was opposed to the implementation of its clauses. He assured that the BTR accord had significant institutions under the name of great figures of every community of the region which proved the inclusiveness of the new accord. He also said that a development board would be formed for each and every community to ensure development of all if the UPPL came to power.

Boro alleged that Mohilary had siphoned off hundreds of crore of rupees meant for development of the region in the last 17 years. He asserted that this time, the reign of the HagramaMohilary-led corrupt government would come to an end. He said the BPF lacked vision and comprehensive policies to bring sustainable development in all spheres.

Mebar Kr. Jamatia, cabinet minister of Forest and Environment, Tripura and president of Indigenous People's Forum of Tripura (IPFT), in his speech said that the mammoth gathering had proved PromodBoro's popularity. He said that the people of the region had great faith in Boro and formation of new government by Boro had become certain. He hoped that the UPPL government would deliver equal development for all.

The meeting was also addressed by former RajyaSabha MP and founder of UPPL, UG Brahma, ABSU general secretary Lawrence Islary, UPPL secretary Wilson Husda and leaders of Kamatapur Development Council and others. All 12 candidates of UPPL under Kokrajhar district along with leaders of various communities attended gathering.
