BOKAJAN: At least 100 vehicles, including two wheelers, three wheelers and four wheelers, participated in a rally at Bokajan on Friday to create awareness on the importance of wearing helmets and promoting safe and responsible driving. The rally was flagged off by Anup Kumar Brahma, Sub-Divisional Officer, Bokajan and Karbi Anglong DTO Bikramaditya Gogoi.
The rally was aimed at spreading awareness towards the significance of wearing helmets and practicing responsible driving among the public. All two wheeler riders wore helmets during the rally to promote safe driving and to emphasize the safety measures to be followed while on road.
The rally was organized by the Karbi Anglong Transport Department in association with several transport unions as part of the ongoing Road Safety Week which is being observed between January 11 to January 17.
A street play highlighting the importance of wearing helmet, seat belt and avoiding the use of mobile phone while driving was also staged during the programme by renowned artiste Rajib Kro. The play gave a witty but hard-hitting message to the public to follow safety measures while on road.
Minutes before flagging off the rally, Bikramaditya Gogoi, DTO, Karbi Anglong recounted the importance of adhering to road safety laws to the public. "A total of 94 persons lost their lives in fatal road accidents in Karbi Anglong district in 2021. In 2022, the figure reduced to 54 and we want to ensure that no more lives are lost on the highways due to irresponsible driving."
Expressing concern over the rising number of road accidents on NH 39, the DTO stressed the importance of wearing helmets for pillion riding and seat belts for co-drivers while driving on the highways.
