Resolve flood & erosion problem caused by Subansiri: Asomiya Yuva Mancha

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) once again reiterated its demand to resolve the perennial flood and erosion problem caused by River Subansiri, the largest tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra.

In connection with the issue, the organization initiated a protest programme at Ghagar on Tuesday. By staging the programme, the organization demanded the State Government to adopt effective scheme for the scientific, permanent resolve of the burning problem and to save the historic Ghunasuti area from the erosion caused by the river.

Notably, the river recently eroded away the Assam-type house of Pradip Baruah who lived at No. 2 Naharani village under Ghunasuti Gaon Panchayat. Similarly, the residences and crop areas owned by Jiten Dutta, Laru Dutta, Bubul Saikia, Anil Saikia, Himen Saikia, Deben Saikia, Borpona Saikia, Kamal Kataki and Moon Baruah of the same village were already eroded away by the river. At present, they are living at a guide dam under the area. The erosion of the river devastated the residences and crop areas of Khireswar Saikia, Prashanta Doley, Robison Doley, Bijoy Doley, Jadab Dutta, Madhab Dutta and Jadu Talukder of Balibheta village too. Some of these erosion victims are staying at Kalita Chuk while others have already shifted from their native village.

By staging the protest, led by central committee organizing secretary Anupom Saikia, the organization further demanded the government to construct an RCC bridge connecting Ghagar Ghat and Ghunasuti immediately and to compensate the flood and erosion victims.
