TEZPUR: The Assam Government’s development projects are increasingly coming under fire for their environmental cost. In Tezpur, a Rs 70-crore water supply scheme is sparking outrage as it threatens to destroy a unique and historic natural landmark, the Dhenukhana hill.
Large-scale excavation of the historic Dhenukhana hills has sparked outrage among residents and heritage activists, who allege that the project posed a grave threat to the region’s ecology, culture, and safety. The excavation, undertaken by Rajasthan-based M/s Balaji Construction for a water supply project under the Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board, is reportedly worth around Rs 70 crore.
Locals emphasized that the Dhenukhana hills were far more than a scenic landmark. They serve as a vital natural barrier shielding Tezpur from floods and other natural disasters, while also playing a crucial role in regulating the city’s climate.
Protesters, including villagers and members of the Tezpur Heritage Protection Committee, warned that the destruction of these hills could cause irreversible environmental damage. The area is a rich habitat for wildlife, including wild elephants, and is home to a diverse variety of plants and trees.
Reports suggest that excavators and heavy machinery are being used to carve large pond-like pits and construct roads atop the hills, even dangerously close to the ancient Ganesh temple. This has allegedly triggered soil erosion, damaged nearby crops, and heightened fears among residents.
The protesters demanding an immediate halt to the excavation have urged the district administration to explore alternative sites for the project. They accuse the authorities of ‘reckless planning’ that sacrifices natural heritage in the name of development.
“Destroying the Dhenukhana hills will destroy Tezpur’s natural shield against the Brahmaputra,” said a protest leader. “Once the structure is compromised, the loss will be permanent and so will the danger,” he added. Tezpur Heritage Protection Committee has demanded the immediate suspension of the project and the exploration of alternative sites or less destructive methods. They have warned of intensified protests if the government fails to act swiftly.
