SILCHAR: Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj Mridul Yadav on Thursday clamped Section 144 in the entire bordering district following the turmoil in Badarpur on Wednesday night that saw blank fire by police to disperse a mob that had gheraoed the police station. Officer in Charge of Badarpur Chandan Goswami was closed on Wednesday night within few hours of the incident. Dipen Kalita, Circle Inspector of Nilambazar was reportedly given the charge of monitoring the situation in Badarpur. Karimganj SP Partha Pratim Das said, Goswami would now report to the State Police Headquarter at Guwahati. Someswar Konwar would be the new OC of Badarpur, a source in the police said.

On Wednesday night, tension gripped Badarpur town area as OC Goswami reportedly opened fire during his chase to detain one accused Rahul Ahmed. However as per police sources, Rahul snatched a knife from a nearby poultry shop and tried to attack Goswami. In retaliation police opened fire, the source claimed.

Agitated by the action of the OC, local public launched a protest and blocked the main road that caused massive disruption of traffic movement. The mob also gheraoed the police station. DSP, Karimganj soon reached the site to control the situation. Local people informed him about various cases of police atrocities on the poor and marginalized after Goswami took charge as the OC. After taking stock of the situation and listening various complaints against Goswami, the DSP conducted an initial inquiry and shared his views with the SP. Goswami was immediately closed by the SP. Local residents later withdrew the road blockade. Situation on Thursday was quite normal. However DC Yadav clamped Section 144 in the entire Karimganj district to avoid any untoward incident.
