Selection Begins for Dr. Bashiram Boro Doctoral Fellowship Award 2024 in BTC Region

KOKRAJHAR: The selection process has started for the “Dr. Bashiram Boro Doctoral Fellowship Award,” 2024, to be given to 50 students of the BTC region pursuing a PhD degree.

Talking to media persons at Bodoland Guest House in Kokrajhar on Monday, the Director of Education, Jagadish Prasad Brahma, said as many as 111 candidates applied for the Dr. Bashiram Boro Doctoral Fellowship Award, of which the selection committee shortlisted 89 applicants. He said 45 applicants were invited for screening on Monday, and the remaining would be called for the same on Tuesday. He said each selected applicant would be given Rs. 90,000 every six months and Rs. 1,80,000 in the first year and Rs. 1,80,000 in the 2nd year, totalling Rs. 3,60,000 in two years. He also said the selection process was based on merit and quality. He further said during the previous council government the selected candidates were given Rs. 50,000 each, and the selection process was not too satisfactory.

Brahma said the “Dr. Bashiram Boro Doctoral Fellowship Award” was the mission of BTC Chief Pramod Boro for the development of higher education. The award was announced by Boro on the occasion of the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti held in front of the BTC Secretariat gate. He said Dr. Bashiram Boro was the first doctorate degree holder from the Bodo community, and he was the principal of Tangla College, Udalguri. He further said BTC Chief Pramod Boro had given maximum priority to the development of education and has launched the Bodofa UN Brahma Super-50 mission for civil service, medical, and engineering aspirants.

It may be mentioned that the Dr. Bashiram Boro Doctoral Fellowship was established to honour the legacy of Dr. Bashiram Boro, a trailblazer from the Bodo community who became the first Ph.D. holder from the community in 1979. Born in Rangaphali-Dhomdhoma in Nalbari, now in the Baksa district of BTR, Dr. Boro dedicated his life to academics and social development. He served as the founder vice-principal and later principal of Tangla College, making significant contributions to education in Udalguri district. This fellowship aims to provide financial support to meritorious students from BTR pursuing doctoral studies in reputed Indian universities and higher educational institutions.

The objective of the award is to promote higher education and financial support, encourage excellence, foster innovation, and community development, and honour Dr. Bashiram Boro, who continues his legacy by nurturing future scholars and leaders from BTR.
