SILCHAR: "Government supports everyone's right to live with dignity and administration is ready to provide all forms of support to the transgender people for their overall development," this was stated by Cachar DC Keerthi Jalli in a meeting organised by Cachar district administration in association with District Social welfare, Department at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner's office here on Friday.

In a first of its kind awareness and sensitisation meeting on transgenders, DC Jalli, who presided over the meeting elaborated on the steps being taken by the government. In her address, Jalli said, "In the same way, that the sex workers of the district were given government assistance with dignity during the Covid pandemic period, the transgender people could also be provided with government support to tide over the pandemic period if they are willing to come forward as Covid has affected all kinds of livelihood. In addition to that they will be given identity cards if they want."

In the presence of officials of Social Welfare Department and various voluntary organisations working for the welfare of women and children, DC Jalli directed the officials to arrange rehabilitation by arranging virtual zoom meeting with such students studying in higher educational institutions like NIT, Assam University and medical college. DC Jalli also assured that the administration is ready to provide employment to transgender people for their overall development.

Earlier, District Social Welfare Officer, Saswati Som requested the members of the NGOs to guide the transgender as well as aware them in their walks of life to register their names in the government portal i.e transgender.gov.in under the Ministry of social justice & Empowerment so that District Magistrate can issue identity cards through which they can be acknowledged in the society and in near future be benefitted from government schemes. She further reiterated that social welfare floated advertisement in local dailies on November 24, 2021 but till now they did not get any response from the localites. "We stand for them to support in every sphere but they should come forward by breaking social barriers and stigma," said DSWO Saswati Som.
