LAKHIMPUR: Prominent social activist, Sodou Asom Moina Parijat's 'Shishu Bandhu' title winner, and a teacher of repute, Prahlad Phukan breathed his last on Saturday. He succumbed to COVID-19 infection at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh. He was a permanent resident of Salal Gaon under Panigaon Police Station of Lakhimpur district. He was 79.

Notably, the social activist had tested positive for COVID-19 at Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH) on Friday and then he was referred to AMCH for advanced treatment on account of his critical health condition.

Born in 1942 at Salal Gaon, Prahlad Phukan passed his matriculation exam in 1963. He secured BA (BT) Degree in 1977. He started his service life as English teacher at Dakhin Telahi MV School. Then he served in Panigaon MV School and Bhaskar MV School. He was again transferred to Panigaon MV School and then he retired from the same school as headmaster in 2002 on February 28. He was involved with Batori Butala Moina Parijat and Batori Butala Parijat Sangha, the oldest Moina Parijat and socio-cultural institution of the State, located at Salal Gaon, till his death. He served as president of these two institutions along with the governing body of Indira Gandhi High School, Telahi Anchalik Sankari Kala-Kristi Bikash Kendra aru Bornamghar, Lakhimpur district unit of Sadharan Jati Bikash Parishad, Asom, as adviser of Telahi-Kamalaboriya Anchalik Krira Santha, as State executive member of Sodou Asom Moina Parijat. Moreover, he led the Lakhimpur district unit of Karmachari Parishad during the years of Assam Anti-Foreigners Movement. He was also popular as a writer, an orator and a cultural activist. Appreciating his relentless service for the children, the Sodou Asom Moina Parijat honoured him with 'Shishu Bandhu' title in 2019.

On Saturday night, Prahlad Phukan was cremated at Maha Prayan Kshetra, the public crematory ground of North Lakhimpur, by the District Health Department following the COVID-19 protocol. He is survived by his wife, four sons and a host of relatives. His demise was mourned by a number of individuals, institutions, organizations of the district along with Sodou Asom Moina Parijat.
