SILCHAR: A habitual gambler allegedly sold his 15-day-old son for Rs 25,000. The incident happened at Bandukmara village in Hailakandi. The infant was reportedly sold to a person in Cachar, and the police teams of both the districts have been jointly trying to trace the child.
Abdur Rauff Laskar was known in Bandukmara for petty crimes including gambling and drug abuse. He even lost his house in gambling and had been staying in his in-law’s residence. Recently, his wife had given birth to a son. Since then, Laskar had allegedly tried to snatch the newborn from his wife and threatened to sell it saying that the child was his property and he could do whatever he wanted to with it. On June 23 midnight, he finally succeeded. His in-laws informed the local police that a red coloured Maruti car came to their house and Laskar sold the newborn.
Hailakandi District Child Protection Unit immediately began a search for the child and came to know that a person named Zakaria Ahmed Barbhuiyan of Kabuganj was involved in the case.
